Iain Duncan Smith announces proposals to make unemployed more mobile
Iain Duncan Smith the Work and Pensions Secretary, has outlinedproposals to make the workforce “more mobile” in the Sunday Telegraph. He has revealedthat ministers were drawing up plans to encourage jobless people living in council houses,to move from areas of high unemployment to areas where more jobs are available.
Iain Duncan Smith explained that millions of people were “trapped in estates where there is no work”. He explained that the proposed scheme would allow them to go to the top of the housing list in another area.
“We have to look at how we get that portability, so that people can be more flexible, can look for work, can take the risk to do it.”
The Telegraph reports that the policy will incentivise people to move through incentives rather than compelling them to move.
