Observatory Practice and Research Forum: Part-time working in London
There are fewer part-time working opportunities in London than in the rest of the UK and more of the opportunities available are filled by people who want full-time work (London Story, 2010).
Londoners who want to work part-time face particularly tough competition in the labour market. As a result, people looking for part-time work face higher levels of unemployment than those looking for either full-time work or both, and one group particularly affected in the capital are mothers.
This Forum will develop a deeper understanding of part-time employment in London, including:
- Who works part-time in London, where and why?
- What are employer attitudes to and experiences of part-time work and how do we stimulate demand?
- What are the main barriers to finding part-time work?
The meeting will include:
- Richard Walkerfrom GLA Intelligence will present recently published research and analysis into the profile of the part-time workforce in London
- Emma Stewartfrom Women Like Us and Lorraine Lanceley from Inclusion will present findings from research on maternal employment and stimulating the availability of part-time work.
- There will be a roundtable discussion on the research findings that will look into implications for Londoners looking for part-time work and on the impacts on child poverty in London.
