Youth Potential: Maximising the life chances of Britain’s greatest asset

Economic and political instability can damage young people’s prospects and opportunities.

Although youth unemployment has been steadily falling, young people continue to live with the impact of the last recession and widespread cuts to services. Too many young people are still ‘not in education, employment or training’ and many more find themselves trapped in low-paid, low skilled jobs, or on short term and zero hours contracts that offer little opportunity to improve their life chances. Alongside this, cuts to benefits, youth and mental health services; lack of affordable housing; and rising levels of student debt mean that young people’s wellbeing and living standards are falling.

How might public services improve their offer to young people, particularly those who have already experienced social and economic disadvantages?

At a time when the impact of Brexit is not yet clear, what we do know is that the vote to leave the European Union creates greater economic uncertainty for young people and leaves many feeling disenfranchised. Young people are Britain’s greatest asset – empowering young people to achieve their potential is crucial in driving inclusive economic growth, productivity and the UK’s prosperity. So how can we overcome the challenges and find the opportunities?

The 2016 Convention places young people at the centre of the youth employment debate. It will highlight the challenges that young people say they face, showcase programmes that work for young people and drive forward the need for evidence-based approaches enable all young people to gain the skills and experience they need for work and throughout their lives.

The Convention will focus on a number of key themes throughout the day which include:

  • Integrated skills and employment support

  • Pathways to employment

  • Learning and earning

  • Careers information, advice and guidance

  • Improving life chances

The Convention is for everyone involved in youth matters -  employers; skills and employability providers; strategists, policy makers and researchers; teachers, trainers and lecturers; as well as young people themselves.

This event will give a voice to everyone who cares about the future prospects of the UK’s prime asset – its young people.
