Welfare reform green paper
by Holmwood on 16 May, 2008 in
Are you going to put up information on the new announcements? I'm trying to figure out how they differ from what the government's already doing.

Hi Holmwood,
The green paper hasn't been published yet, but a brief summary and comment page can be found at http://www.commonsleader.gov.uk/output/page2463.asp with the official DWP press release at http://www.dwp.gov.uk/mediacentre/pressreleases/2008/may/hse080-140508.a...
The description in the press release is in line with what the government have been saying for some time now, but the details in the green paper will be far more interesting to go through. I'll put together a full story once it's been published and I've had chance to read it.
Simplifying the benefits system is the one that has me excited - in an ideal world, this would be the Working Age Benefit idea that's been put forward by various think tanks, rolling up and simplifying a whole bunch of benefit regimes into one package. The current system's complexity acts as a barrier to both entry and exit. Surely the bureaucracy from Brazil isn't the best way of encouraging people to get jobs?
