Congratulations Ms Harrison
CBE for "services to Unemployed People and to the Voluntary Sector"
Edit - Here's an ALP press release on the topic. Sorry for hijacking your thread bigbaldbloke!
The Chairman of the Association of Learning Providers, Martin Dunford, has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his contribution to skills training alongside other leading figures in the sector.
The number of awards for independent providers in the publicly-funded employment and skills sector is unprecedented and are seen as a major breakthrough in terms of much deserved recognition when the efficient delivery and high quality of providers are seen as more vital than ever.
ALP members recognised in the independent sector were:
- Martin Dunford OBE, Chairman of the Association of Learning Providers (ALP) and CEO of Skills Training UK Ltd
- Eileen Cavalier OBE, Founder and CEO of the London College of Beauty Therapy
- Janette Faherty OBE, CEO of Avanta Enterprise Ltd
- Emma Harrison CBE, Founder and Chairman of A4e Ltd
ALP’s chairman, Martin Dunford, has been awarded an OBE. Martin is the CEO of Skills Training UK Ltd, a major provider of welfare-to-work programmes and where working in partnership with employers, from the largest to the smallest, is at the heart of its operation and the reason for its success. The company’s employer responsiveness culture has allowed for easy extension into Train to Gain and other services to employers in both the private and public sector, particularly with local authorities. In 2009, Skills Training UK was awarded a prime contract in the south east for the Government’s Flexible New Deal programme. Martin has been chairman of ALP since June 2004.
Eileen Cavalier has been awarded an OBE. Eileen opened the independent London College of Beauty Therapy (LCBT) in 1995 and is its CEO. LCBT’s original mission statement, ‘Setting the standards for the industry’, has been her principal motivation ever since and the College has provided the opportunity for young people and adults, many of them were formerly excluded from training due to their financial circumstances, to obtain the qualifications and skills needed for careers in an industry in desperate need of trained employees. Prior to 1995 there were no public colleges in London training those seeking a career in the beauty industry. Today LCBT is the UK’s market leading beauty training college with 1100 students funded by LSC and ESF, undertaking over 1500 programmes, with 70% of students either 16-18 or disadvantaged adults. LCBT is the Centre of Vocational Excellence for Beauty, Retail and Holistic Care.
Avanta CEO, Janette Faherty, has received an OBE. Janette has been working at the forefront of the welfare to work industry since joining TNG as a training manager over 26 years ago. Now, CEO of Avanta Enterprise Ltd, a leading nationwide employment, skills and enterprise company incorporating TNG and InBiz, Janette is one of the UK’s top entrepreneurs. Today, Avanta operates nationwide from over 100 locations and employs over 1,000 people. At any one time, Avanta is working with over 30,000 individuals to develop their skills, gain employment or start their own business.
A CBE has been awarded to Emma Harrison, the founder and chairman of Sheffield-based welfare and employment specialist, A4e, which works with people and communities to tackle unemployment and deliver skills, advice, guidance and enterprise. The company is the largest supplier of DWP-contracted employment services in the UK and operates in seven other countries across the world. Emma is a mentor and supporter of many small businesses and is a non-executive on the board of the Institute of Directors. She is active in a voluntary capacity as founder of the Foundation for Social Improvement, which supports over 1,000 small charities both at home and abroad with training and advice.
Graham Hoyle OBE, ALP’s chief executive, said: “It is greatly encouraging that independent providers are at last receiving the recognition that they deserve for the contribution which they are making to the Government’s employment and skills programmes. The flexibility in independent provider delivery is showing its full value as we work with other partners to alleviate the worst effects of this recession. I congratulate Martin, our chairman, and ALP member colleagues for the recognition of their fantastic contribution to the success of the employment and training system at this vital time.”

And an "Officer of the Order of the British Empire" to Janette Faherty too, girl power! ;)
Oooh, and the same for Martin Dunford for services to Skills (doublé entendre or what?). Well done Martin.
Where's yours Daniel?
There's a few of them, aren't there? Mine got lost in the post I'm afraid. Any connection to media reports of DWP managers jumping up and down on a hapless postie were purely coincidental.
How often are such distinguished people likely to appear on a list that also contains Status Quo, Jenson Button and Captain Pickard?!!! Cool!
Emma Harrison is distinguished???
I also note that part of the justification for her CBE is 'services to the voluntary sector'. I think we should all recognise A4E's massive contribution to that sector and thank goodness the Queen has too.
When I heard about this, it made me want to [skip through the flowers]
Moderation - Fixed that for you.
Do you think it was watching benefit busters that convinced 'Liz to make the award?

Congratulations John and Christopher!
Emma Harrison awarded...surprise surprise...still at least she did not het the Damehood she tried to obtain thanks to her New Labour love affair...
Emma receiving an "honour" for services to the voluntary sector? Is Sayeeda Warsi getting one for services to the LGBT community? Laughable & paid for in full. I can't help wondering how much influence her board adviser for business development had in engineering this.
Harrison, Dunford and Faherty awarded gong's?! Sickening!
All the more reason to do away with this absurd, needless and outdated honours system! I'm sure people recognise it for the farce it is.
I'm sure there were some misprints in the Honour's List. Emma's award was for [flowers and buttercups]; Janette's was for being the nicest and [superest] person in the W2W arena; and Martin's was for being the best at [moonbeams and schnozzcumbers].
I give it about [forty] minutes before I get moderated.
[Moderation - Hmph]
Was the Producer of Benefit Busters also awarded a gong for their creative genius in fictional drama.... and can the gong for any recipient be rescinded in future ?
In the current climate, I would much rather see a deserving, Humanitarian Award that was actually worth something be directed to (for example) someone in the Moutain Rescue Service or Emergency Services who do socially redeaming work.
She got a gong for turning the unemployed into a commodity? Making a good 'profit' for her 'business'? Sure a few people might be helped by this 'initiative', but one wouldn't necessarily file her company under that of a caring profession.
Still, she sleeps soundly in her mansion. Don't you think?
The buck stops here, dear. Or there? Haven't met the lass, so couldn't say conclusively my theories are completely correct.
I'm going for a slightly comedic effect there. GSOH? Maybe best left off the CV.
Good day.
I doubt she will be sleeping quite so soundly in her mansion when ATV Network publish their findings from an undercover investigation at A4e Gateshead in early 2009. I've got my doubts whether their report will see the light of day. But the ATV website clearly states it will be published early this year.
When did the comments section get taken over by quite such extreme levels of grump? Blimey.
Grump, Daniel? You're joking!! All the above comments are spot on! We call 'em as we see 'em!
can someone help me please I want to no who you complain to if you think a cbe has been given out wrongly
You'll be lucky. Have you seen what it goes through before it gets to the Queen?!! Live with it - she was nominated by someone who thought she was deserving and they put a good enough case to get through all of the checks. Give it up!!
I dont see your problem? I have been looking for were to complain for a few days now but I cant find anything, so someone has to nominate a person ok, well the checks were not that good then. if anyone can point me in the direction
highpark1 I honestly do not mean to be rude but I think you should direct your considerable (and I have no doubt justified) ire to more constructive ends than negativity towards Ms Harrison and her organisation. I'm sure your life will take a more positive, and hopefully employed, turn if you do.
many thanks for your advise
Never question authority?
